Whitetails, coyotes and fun

I spent most of Monday and today in the wilds of Idaho, mostly near Camas NWR, Market Lake and areas between.

Monday morning I watched a White-tailed buck chasing a doe out near a patch of high sage brush, so being the sneaky fellow that I am, I decided to surprise them.  That I did.

The buck jumped out of the sagebrush, then he started chasing the doe.  For safety or for something that has a greater pull than safety.

I flushed a Northern Harrier on the way back to the truck.

The rest of the day was hiking about seven miles with very little excitement until the evening when I flushed a Long-eared owl with very poor light which equals poor pictures.

This morning I was on the desert long before the sun rose in the east.  Jackrabbits were all over the place, but no Golden eagles to chase them close to me.

The White-tailed deer appeared to be thicker than the jack rabbits.

I watched 14 bull elk about a mile away from me, but as I dropped over a ridge, nine White-tailed  were working a far ridge and were more concerned what was in the tall grass than they were of me.

Four coyotes were spread out through the marsh hunting.  It appeared two adults were teaching two pups how to hunt.

The coyotes flushed as Snowshoe hare out of the marsh grass and it ran right between two deer that were more concerned about the coyotes than they were of me.

I followed the deer over the hill and then I had a card in my camera malfunction.  I thought I was still shooting pictures of five bucks chasing a doe in heat, but nothing was recorded.  I am heading back on Friday to try to get those bucks sparring and fighting; but it was an experience of a lifetime that was missed.

After I realized the card had gone baaaaaad, I headed home and replaced the card.  To make sure it was working, I headed for the river bottoms and ran into this beautiful Saw Whet owl.  I ran back and got my wife and grandchildren to see it.  A rare find to be sure.  I will take Lady Luck anytime.

Just a couple of days in the wilds of Idaho for a wild retired old bald man.

Sunrise

With all the storms rolling it both morning and evening, it makes for some interesting sunsets and sunrises.  Here is a sunrise I caught this week on my way to school.

A great way to start another wild day in Idaho.

SkyWatch Friday - Stormy sunrise

Storms, storms and more storms continue to roll in.  Sometimes the sun gets a chance to peek through the cloud either in the morning or evening.  Tuesday morning as I was leaving for school, we had a beautiful sunrise to celebrate another snow/rain storm moving in.  This was taken from my back steps.

Half way to school I captured this scene.

Fishing Henrys again

With rain and snow predicted at Henrys Lake, I still ran up to get a few hours in.  We thought the storm would roll in about 11, but it rolled in about 9.

I got there early and had caught eight cutts before the sun started to come over the eastern skyline.  The clouds were rolling in, but a beautiful eastern sky made catching fish a little more enjoyable.

Before the weather chased me off, I was able to fish next to some fishing friends.  Dave from Utah who is "Utah's Greatest Olympic Diver"  (another story for another time) and Garth from Burley, Idaho, helped me laugh about some old experiences.  A very enjoyable few hours.

The cutthroats were willing as I caught a total of 14 for the morning before I headed in to protect my camera from the rain and snow.

SkyWatch Friday - Henrys Lake sunrise

We have been having unseasonably warm weather with very few clouds in the sky.  Last Saturday as I was getting on Henrys Lake for some fishing, the sun slowly colored the few early morning clouds.

With the weather the weather predicted to change this weekend, we will see a lot more clouds and more colorful sunsets and sunrises.  Just the beginning of a wild day in Idaho.

SkyWatch - Beginning and end of a fishing day.

Sometimes the sunrise starting a fishing day and the sunset, closing it is a good as the catching part of the day.  I try to time my trip to Henrys Lake so that I will catch the sunrise on the Buffalo River or the Henrys Fork.  Here is the sunrise early one morning last week as I was heading fishing.

Then after a successful day of fishing, interrupted by a nap and getting a load of firewood for the winter.  The setting sun bid me farewell as it went to bed.

SkyWatch Friday - Rexburg Temple

Wednesday morning on my way to school, the only light showing through the grey skies was right behind the Rexburg LDS Temple.  The silhouette of the temple was highlighted by the light rays streaming from the heavens.

A great view to start another wild day in Idaho.

SkyWatch Friday - Rising sun-spike

With the cold mornings hovering around zero, the air is filled with ice crystals creating beautiful sun spikes.  These only last for about three or four minutes before they are gone.  The best ones are just as the sun breaks over the eastern Teton Mountains east of Rexburg.  Timing is critical to catch them at their peak.

SkyWatch Friday - Frosty sunrise

Tuesday morning as I headed to school, the sun was just rising and a bank of fog almost filtered out the sun.  This is one of my favorite sunrise pictures I have taken.  The colors were stunning.  Hope you enjoy it.

If you enlarge it, you can see the frost and the sliver of the Teton River reflecting the yellows of the sun.  Just the beginning of another wild day in Idaho.

SkyWatch Friday - Sunrise

This morning as I was getting the firewood for the day from the backyard, the sun was just below the skyline.  I quickly hurried back to the house to grab my camera only to be a little late for the most beautiful picture.  The sun was peeking over the horizon as I got this shot - not the best, but a great start of the day.

Later as I was coming home from school, I interrupted a kestrel snacking on a gopher.  As I stopped it flew off and I was able to get this beautiful picture of it flying off with its lunch.  It was overcast with a few snowflakes falling and did not make for a great background, but I was pleased with my luck.

SkyWatch Friday - Rexburg sunrise

Late last night we finally got a break from the snow and grey skies that have been with us all week.  This morning on my way to school there was enough fog in the air to create a beautiful sunrise.  I loved it.  Just hope it holds out until the weekend when I will take some boy scouts fishing.

SkyWatch Friday - Teton Sunrise

This picture was taken just seven minutes after the second picture of a sunrise over Rexburg.  It is amazing how quickly the light changes during a sunrise and sunset.  I was on my way to school when I encountered the beautiful sunrise.

Here are the Teton Peaks  peeking out from behind the Moody Mountains.

SkyWatch Friday - Sunrise Sunset.

Sunrise - Just before the sun rises, the fog created by below zero temperatures are colored by the sun rays before the sun has risen behind the low east clouds.

The same day the sun colors the west sky as it sets below the western horizon as I watch for eagles to fly into the large cottonwoods to perch for the night..

Ice fishing Henrys Lake

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving week - I did.  All of our family was home for five days and we had a ball.  Between all the festivities and food, we ice fished Henrys Lake three times.  We were successful every day and saw some beautiful sunsets and sunrises.
Here is Lion's Head Mountain just northeast of Henrys Lake.

Here is the sunrise on Friday while we were catching fish like mad - just had to take time for the picture.

Results of the fishing was great and we had great times together.

Darn those slippery fish - even below freezing, they are hard to hold on to.

Just three more wild days in Idaho.

SkyWatch Friday - Sunrise

The weather has turned from winter all the way back to Indian Summer.  We are having beautiful days starting off with stunning sunrises like this one over Big Bend Ridge.

The sun is just starting to peek through the scattered clouds highlighting some and casting shadows of others with some rays spiking through.  Another start of a wild day in Idaho.

Sky Watch Friday - Sunrise over Henrys Lake.

The fishing on Henrys Lake is best before the sun rises - but it is usually interupted by the beautiful colors of the sunrise itself.
