Winter Goldfinch

The temperature is below zero and everything is frozen except - Goldfinches fighting over my nyjer socks.  They need a traffic controller, but it is too cold.  Here they fight over position at the breakfast table.

Fighting over a tiny seed is common.

Others fly in to join the feeding frenzy.

Mid air battles resemble the dog-fights of World War II.

After most of the American Goldfinch leaves, a lone one is joined by a Lesser Goldfinch.  Lessers are very uncommon to Rexburg.  But I have had about six hanging around the last week.

Just another wild day in Idaho to celebrate.

SkyWatch Friday - Winter sunset

Storm after storm after storm has rolled through Idaho in the last 10 days.  But several evening had a little clearing - enough to harvest some beautiful sunsets.  This was one of them taken from my back yard near Rexburg, with a foot of snow on the ground.

The end of another wild day in Idaho.

SkyWatch Friday - Snow sunset

About a foot of snow fell in the Moody Mountains and I spent Tuesday evening getting stuck and unstuck, but the view was absolutely beautiful.  Here is the sky just as the snow storm was leaving.

And here is the sky after the clouds had cleared and the sun was setting over Rexburg.

A beautiful was to end another wild day in Idaho.

SkyWatch Friday - Mud volleyball (wrestling).

This week is homecoming week at Madison High School in Rexburg.  I am still in charge of the homecoming activities - a job really don't enjoy, but try to do well.

Tuesday night was Mud Volleyball, but it usually is more wrestling than volleyball.  Here is one of my favorite pictures of the evening.

Then after cleaning up, I was leaving after all the kids were gone and the sun was setting, I was pleased to witness the setting sun.

After the sun set I captured this single strand of grass seeds creating this silhouette against the sun.

Just the end of another wild day in Idaho.

SkyWatch Friday - Parade sunset

After watching the parade for the International Dance Festival last Monday night and mowing my mother-in-law's lawn, this beautiful sunset ended another wild day in Idaho.

Desert sunset - SkyWatch Friday

Tuesday evening as I was coming back from observing the Long-eared owls, the thin clouds created a beautiful sunset across the Big Desert west of Rexburg.  It was beautiful in my rear view mirror.

Earlier in the late afternoon, I caught this Long-eared owl coming into a tree to roost.

And then just as I was leaving the 11 Long-eared, I found this one hiding next to a tree trunk.

A great day to spend the evening celebrating another wild day in Idaho.

SkyWatch Friday - Early morning Fog

After a snow/rain storm most of the night, the sun tried burning off the thick fog as it rose over the Teton River west of Rexburg.
