American Goldfinch - GBBC

I am right in the middle of the Great Backyard Bird Count.  Tomorrow I will spend most of the day photographing and observing birds - but if the weather is good and a little warm, I have promised a grand-daughter a fishing trip.

The last two days I have set up my blind in the backyard to take pictures out of.  The American Goldfinch can be difficult to get close to, but a blind usually solves the problem.

American Goldfinch are one of the few birds that molt most of their feathers twice each year.  Here is one that has started getting its summer plumage even though it is cold.

There is always a lot of fighting around the niger sack when they meet to feed.

Here some also battle the larger Housefinch over the sunflower seed feeder.

My favorite picture of the day is a goldfinch artistically leaving the feed sack in a style good enough for the Olympics.

Just another enjoyable wild day in Idaho.

If anyone needed photos of the wing and tail feather for a Goldfinch these would do the trick.

I see you have used your sunrise photo for your title. That is one spectacular sunrise.

Hope you manage to take your Grandaughter fishing.

It seems wrong to say "that photo looks like a painting" because the painting I guess is supposed to represent real life. But it is so rare to get a photo that has all the elements of a good painting -- especially of a living, fast-moving subject! I think that last one definitely qualifies. All the photos are beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

Looks like my house, Bill.. We have TONS of Goldfinches... We also have some House Finches but not nearly as many as the Goldfinches.

Great pictures.

Using the 'blind' definitely paid off for you. Super 'in flight' shots Bill. FAB.
P.S. For some reason sightings of our Goldfinch have been very limited in our garden so far this winter.

Great captures of the goldfinches taking off and fluttering around the feeder. They are always such a bundle of excitement to watch and to take in. Lots of fun photographing such active moments.

Hi Bill, thank you so much for visiting my blog, it has been a pleasure to visit yours.

I hope your Backyard Bird Count went well. Your Goldfinch is really quite different to ours, notably lacking the red on the head. I get a lot of them in my garden but at the moment the Greenfinches have the upper hand and seem to win the 'battle of the feeders'! Lovely photos :)

These are super photos, as always, Bill. You capture birds in a wonderful variety of poses and actions--we all learn a lot from your photos and text. Especially as a painter, I like to view and learn from your photos.

Bill: That last shot of the Goldfinch is outstanding.

Great photos Bill. Finches are the scrappiest little birds. If they spent half as much time just eating as they do squabbling, they would be much better off:)

Great images Bill, using the blind really made a difference in what you were able to capture.
