Winter birds are here

Yesterday afternoon I had a few hours after church so I took a couple of them and went birding along the Henrys Fork of the Snake River.  I saw a lot of raptors like a Sharp-shinned, Light-morph and Dark-morph Red-tailed, Rough-legged Hawks and three bald eagles.  Here is a very dark Red-tailed hawk flying off its perch.

I saw hundreds of ducks, Trumpeter swans, a few killdeer and other shorebirds.  Here is a pair of Wilson's snipes trying to keep warm on a slough with a few snowflakes falling.

And then on the way home I located a flock of Cedar Waxwings eating Hawthorne berries.  They are some of my favorite birds.

Just a few minutes of wildness in Idaho.  Have a great evening.

Saw your comment on Troutbirder's site and stopped by for a visit. I love the look of your neck of the woods. I have to admit that my birding skills are nonexistent. Plant life and slow-moving insects are my specialty.

Hi Bill, I wonder why some of those birds don't go farther south for the winter....

How do YOU get around in winter up there --when you have so much snow and ice? Four-wheel drive?? Chains??? Since I've never lived anywhere where it snows much, I'd be petrified driving in it... ha

Great pictures. I love the Waxwings also.

Betsy,
We drive carefully!!!!! Some did not on Saturday and ended up in a lot of trouble in the mountains. Coming down the steep inclines it was 2 mph. I am not kidding. It was slipping and sliding all the way off the mountain. Slow, easy and carefully.

Hi Bill Great shots love the Red Tailed Hawk and the Ceder Waxwing. Some of our winter visitors are arriving here now,and I love to get out to see them. On the snow if we get 3 or 4 inches here everthing grinds to a halt. Not used to it and people dont know how to drive on it,nice and easy is the answer.

Between the moose last time and all these wonderful birds this time, you have captured some great shots in your trekking, Bill. I love cedar waxwings, too--here in Florida, they swoop in to feast on the berries of holly trees, in large, noisy flocks. Their coloring is lovely.

The raptors are really apparent here in SD too, incl those bald eagles that winter here. Looks like you had a nice birding day.

Good photos! Did you see all those birds in one afternoon? Sometime you will have to tell me a few of your secret places along the Henrys to view so many bird varieties. I'd love to see some of them in MY camera. I don't have an offroad vehicle but my Subaru can get around pretty well.
